Alter and Altar, what is the difference?

A lot of people get confused with the words alter and altar. Some English users go as far as using them interchangeably. However, the 2 words are different in spelling and meaning. Here is the differnce.




 

Altar (noun) Refers to a table in church where clergy stand to deliver sermons.

The priest has already moved to the altar.

The children were restricted from moving to the altar.

The church has decided the rebuild the altar after the

 

Alter means to change something from its formal state.

The position of the ball has been altered.

Alter the position of the tables.

The date for the wedding has been altered.
